When leadership hurts

It doesn’t always arrive shouting.

Sometimes it enters quietly—

in a meeting where your voice is noted,

but not recorded.


In a decision already made

before the question was asked.

In the smile that says we value you

while the body tightens,

bracing for impact.


Psychological safety doesn’t shatter at once.

It erodes.

Slowly.

Like trust rubbed thin by silence,

by watching who is protected

and who is exposed.


Toxic leadership teaches the nervous system

to stay alert.

To scan rooms instead of ideas.

To measure words instead of meaning.

To perform competence

while swallowing fear.


Emails are reread ten times.

Voices soften.

Shoulders rise.

Sleep fractures into fragments

of unfinished conversations

and rehearsed defences.


People stop bringing their whole selves to work.

Not because they lack commitment—

but because wholeness becomes unsafe.


Narcissistic power bends reality.

It calls harm “misunderstanding,”control “high standards,”

and fear “professionalism.”

It asks for loyalty,

but offers no refuge.


And the cost is not abstract.

It lives in anxiety masked as resilience.

In burnout praised as dedication.

In staff who once led with curiosity

now leading with caution.


Creativity withers where fear presides.

Collaboration collapses under competition for approval.

Brilliance dims—not from lack of talent,

but from lack of care.


Yet still, people stay.

Not because they are weak—

but because they are hopeful.

Because they believe leadership can be better

than what they are surviving.


Healing begins when harm is named.

When leaders choose humility over image.

When safety is designed, not assumed.

When power listens.


Psychological safety is not a luxury.

It is the soil where trust grows,

where wellbeing breathes,

where people dare to speak,

to lead,to stay.


And when leadership heals,

people do too.
